It was during 4th grade when Big Band Bob and mother Mary Thornton bought all of us little Thorntons a new house! We moved to a much nicer suburb, further away from the close in to Chicago suburb we had all lived in. And this house was big- two stories, with a double sized lot for us all to play in, with a huge tree in the backyard, garden space, and just lots of room in general.

The house had five bedrooms, two big ones, and three very small ones-and, most amazing thing of all- three bathrooms! Let me tell you, when you have five kids and two adults, sometimes the wait for a single bathroom can seem very long indeed. I thought we all had it made, room-wise; but of course that was before we welcomed three additional brothers to the Thornton household… but, that was a few years off.

We also had a large, finished basement, which Big Band decorated with numerous photos from his and my mother’s big band days, touring on the road. There were signed photos from virtually every top act of that era, from ones with my Mom and her sisters, “The Singing Three Feathers” and Frank Sinatra; to photos of Liberace (who signed his with “You’re Nice”! to my mother), to pretty much anyone you can think of, from Louis Armstrong to Jack Teagarden! There was even a large publicity photo of my young twenty-something father, playing trombone with his bare foot, shirtless yet wearing a bow tie and pork-pie hat!!

I have always known I come from a very unusual type of family! And, usually, I am glad of it…
